Theravada monks during Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin period are
divided into two main groups: the Kamavasti who reside primarily in urbanized areas, and the
Aranyavasi who remain in the forest or remote areas. Furthermore, there are Raman Nikaya
which are the Mon monks in Theravada Buddhism, and Chinese Nikaya and Annam Nikaya in
Mahayana Buddhism.
Later, King Rama IV (1851-1868) established another nikaya, called the
Dhammayuttika Nikaya, in addition to the existing Maha Nikaya.
In the mealwhile, Brahmin-Hinduism still held a significant role concurrently with
