At present, the Theravada Buddhism school in Thailand is divided into two
nikayas or sects, the Maha Nikaya, which is the original monastic community or Sangha, and the
Dhammayuttika Nikaya, which was established by King Rama IV. (1851-1868).
In addition, there are followers of Mahayana Buddhism which has flourished along with
Theravada Buddhism. Today, there are two nikayas of Mahayana Buddhism in Thailand, including
the Chinese Nikaya and Annam Nikayas. According to the registry in 2011, there are totally 17 of
temples and Chinese House of Priests, such as Wat Pho Man Khunaram in Bangkok, Wat Mangkon
Kamalawat in Bangkok Wat Bampen Chine Prote in Bangkok, Wat Pho Yen in Kanchanapuri, and
Wat Chi Pracha Samosorn in Chachoengsao, etc. Today, there are two nikayas in the Mahayana
Buddhism in Thailand: The Chinese and the Annam Nikayas. According to the 2011 registry
there are 17 temples and Chinese Houses of Priests, e.g. Wat Phoman Khunaram,Wat Mangkon
Kamalawat and Wat Bamphenchinprot in Bangkok; Wat Phoyen in Kanchanaburi and Wat
Chinprachasamoson in Chachoengsao, etc.
