                    Religions in the Kingdom of Thailand



















                                Buddhism






                                             Nearly 90% of Thailand's population is Buddhist of the Theravada school which
                                strictly adheres to the original teachings and monastic rules of discipline laid down by the
                                Buddha. Theravada is the dominant form of religion in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia,
                                and Sri Lanka.
                                           Majority of Thai people has practiced Theravada Buddhism since Thawarawadi
                                                                th
                                period, lasting from the 6  to the 11  centuries. Theravada Buddhism has been stabilized as the
                                                       th
                                main religion practiced in Thailand since then and throughout Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods
                                until today. Consequently, over such a long period of time, Buddhism has had great influences on
                                way of life, traditions, belief, art, literature, and value of Thai people.
