Another division of Christianity, the American Presbyterians, came to Bangkok
during 1847, and established their church on August 31, 1849. A group of 5 missionaries,
including Reverend Stephen Mattoon and his wife, Reverend Stephen Bush and his wife, and
Samuel Reynold Houses, founded the first Presbyterian Church of Bangkok in their residence in
the area of Kudichin (behind Wat Arun Ratchavararam.) Later, the Protestant mission expanded
to many provinces: in Phetchaburi province in 1861, Chiang Mai in 1867, Lampang in 1880
and Chiang Rai in 1888.

The Christian propagation by the priests and missionaries has continued for a long
period of time. It not only expanded the Christian faith but also continued to bring beneficial

impacts in many development at aspects, particularly, in education and the application of
