In about the same period, the first group of Protestant Missionaries of Christians
arrived Bangkok on August 23, 1828, led by Reverend Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff, a
missionary physician of the Netherlands Missionary Society, together with Reverend Jacob
Tomlin of London Missionary Society. One of the most important and well known Protestant
missionaries in Siam was the American Reverend Doctor Dan Beach Bradley, known to
Siamese people as Mo Pladley, for having played a great role in bringing knowledge of many
Western medicine branches to the Siam with great contributions including, the performance of
surgery, the inoculation of smallpox vaccine and the innovation of the Thai alphabet typewriter.
Doctor Bradley was a member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions
(ABCFM). He arrived Thailand in 1834. Another group of the Protestant missionaries whose
work was quickly noticed were the American Baptists who arrived in 1833. Reverend William
Dean of this division of Christianity established the first Chinese Christian Church in Siam on
July 1, 1837. It was believed to be the first Protestant Church in Asia. It was called Xing Guang
Religious ceremony of the (later was renamed The Maitrichit Chinese Baptist Church) and this was part of a plan to expand
Christians in a church. Wat Mae the religion to China.
