The North is the region where that Muslims have lived the longest periods, with
demographics spreaded out in as many as 9 provinces, with the highest population density
being in Chiang Mai.
The Northeast, Muslims in the region are mainly Pakistani Muslims, Malay
Muslims and Bangladesh Muslims.
Overall, each group of Muslims has different historical, political, economical, social,
and educational backgrounds. Some were captured and imprisoned by the enemy in war in early
Rattanakosin period, some were traders, etc. At present, there are approximately 8-10 million
Muslims in Thailand or about 10 percent of the country’s population, the highest number being
