Churches and Religious Objects
Religious places for ritual ceremonies in Christianity
take several forms as follows.
The Basilica
The Basilica is a sacred building designated as the
official administrative and center of worship for the Pope. The name
may also refer to churches of major importance in history, such that
the Pope may grant it the status of a Basilica. Examples are St. Peter's
Basilica, St. John Lateran Basilica, Basilica of Saint Santa Maria
Maggiore, Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, etc.
The Cathedral
The cathedral designates a church which is led by a
local Bishop. It is considered as the headquarters of each diocese.
Local Bishop propagates, teaches and administrates his diocese from
this cathedral. It is a symbolic authority of the Bishop as the Pastor.
The cathedral contains a sacred altar, or a cathedra (bishop's seat),
of the Bishop. In Thailand, there are cathedrals in every diocese.
The Assumption Cathedral is located in Bangrak of Bangkok,
and serves as the residency of the Cardinal and head of diocese
1 in Thaialnd. Other examples are the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception in Chantaburi, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in
Chiang Mai, and St. Raphael Cathedral in Surat Thani.
