Important Religious Days
Fridays
Friday is the most important day of the week. On that day Muslims must congregate
to listen to Khutbah Speech, perform Friday prayer, and Dhuhr prayer, which is the prayer to
Allah. These practices are gestures of commemoration to Allah. The rites take approximately half
an hour. Before one enters the congregation, each person must cleanse his body well and dress
in clean clothing; then he is ready to listen diligently to the sermon and partake in the practice.
The Ramadan Month
th
Ramadan is the month of fasting and is in the 9 lunar month of the Islamic
Calendar. During this period, Muslims must refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, and
engaging in sexual relations. This daily period lasts from dawn to night fall after the sunset. Ones
who may be excused from fasting in Ramadaan are those who have some special condition,
such as those who are suffering from illness, or are pregnant and breastfeeding, traveling, or
have a chronic decease, etc. They can omit the fasting altogether, or make it up later. One such
compensation is to give food for charity to poor people.
