Other featured religious objects found in
Thailand are Buddha footprints. The concept of worship to
Buddha footprints appears since the Dvaravati period and are
continually present throughout the periods of Sukhothai, Ayutthaya
and Rattanakosin until today. Buddhist layman devotees believe the
replicas are models of the actual footprint where the Lord Buddha
had walked and imprinted his footsteps on the earth at various
places. The models are made of varied materials, such as stone,
wood and copper, etc. The Buddha footprint is representative
of a sacred object classified in the “Paribhoga” Chedi type.
However, there is a certain feature of the footprint that is believed
to be the genuine footprint of the Lord Buddha, in that he had
actually “visited” that place; therefore, it is the real “Paribhoga”
Chedi. The authentic footprint representations in Thailand are
believed to be the ones in Saraburi and Prachinburi provinces.
There are many other forms of religious objects
representing the Buddha, such as Sarisa (Buddha relics) and votive
tablets, etc.
