Cetiya or Chedi or Stupa is a Buddhist commemorative
monument usually housing sacred relics associated with the Buddha
or other important person. Buddhist Chedi associated with the
Buddha are classified into 4 types; Prathart Chedi (Dhatu Chedi),
in which relics or remains of the Buddha are contained, Boriphoke
Chedi (Paribhoga Chedi), in which personal belongings of the
Buddha are contained, Dhamma Chedi, in which craved inscriptions
relation to the Lord Buddha and written records of his teachings are
contained, and Oot-thesig Chedi (Uddesika Chedi), which were
something to be made for commemoration of the Buddha, such as
the Buddha statues, the amulets, the imitation Buddha's footprints.
“The Great Cetiya” in Thailand
On the wall inside the ordination hall (ubosot) of Wat
Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, there are niches with paintings of
“The Great Chedi of Siam” which are eight important Buddhist
chedi from across Thailand. The name “The Great Chedi of Siam” or
“Chom Chedi” in Thai, was given by Prince Damrong Rajanubhab.
2 The paintings were designed and drawn by artists from Fine Art
Department, and were completed in year 1946. The Prince Damrong
Rajanubhab described importance of each Chedi as followings;
1. Phra Pathom Chedi in Nakhon Pathom Province, built
during the first period of Buddhism establishment in Siam.
2. Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat in Lob Buri Province, the
first stupa when Mahayana Buddhism established in Siam.
3. Phra That Hariphunchai in Lamphun Province, the
first chedi built in Lanna region.
