the day of celebration, 11 saroops of Guru Granth Sahib are brought
out to be installed on the prepared pedestal. The continual prayer for
blessing and the reading from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib will go on
for 60 hours. The adherents will take turns in leading the prayer with
strong determination and faith throughout the day and night. The
completion of the prayer will come to an end on the actual birthday
of Guru Nanak Dev. The celebration will include a big feast prepared
from the kitchen. In the evening, all adherents come together to
celebrate. Granthi will give a sermon from the Sri Guru Granth
Sahib. Then there will be reciting of hymns in a Kirtan style, which
is the style of conveying the sermon with music. Furthermore, many
devoted young Sikhs participate in the ceremony. When the right
moment approaches, the reciting of the Anand Sahib takes place
1 with the prayer for blessing to finalize the ceremony.
2. The Birthday (Gurpurab) of Guru Gobind Singh
The celebration of the Birthday of Guru Gobind Singh,
the 10th Guru of Sikhism, is celebrated between the end of December
and the beginning of January. On the day, the celebration will be
as big as the day of Guru Nanak, but will put more emphasis on
content and philosophy of the Guru’s teachings.
3. The Martyr Day
The Martyr Day is in June of every year. It is the day
that the 5th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Arjan, sacrificed his life for his
religion. He was tortured by being forced to sit on a burning iron
pan under the command of the ruler of India at that time. The Guru
was sacrificed fighting for the right to believe in his philosophy.
He showed people his belief in the equality of all humans in every
religion. The Sikhs adherents around the world united in celebrating
this day in honor of Guru Arjan and called it ‘The Martyr Day.” This
celebration is a commemoration of the Guru. On that day, besides
having a religious ceremony in Gurdwaras, the adherents will offer
drinking water to all passersby without the prejudice of religion.
The gesture is to signify the extinguishing of fire to ease the pain
for those on fire, as empathy to Guru Arjan when he was tortured.
Inside the Gurdwara, a drink is offered, made of soaked almonds,
